Mumbai, 12 December:

The Mumbai Press Club is happy to announce that the coveted National RedInk Award for ‘Lifetime Achievement’ has been bestowed on senior journalist and author T.J.S George, 94, for his long and distinguished career as an Editor and columnist. In the 1960s, Mr. George was Editor of the famous Patna-headquartered newspaper ‘The Searchlight’ known for its anti-establishment stand. For helming the newspaper’s drive against corruption in Bihar’s K.B. Sahay-led government, Mr. T J S George spent three weeks in Hazaribagh Central Jail.

Mr. George founded the well-known ‘Asiaweek’ in Hong Kong in 1975. Six years later, he returned to India to settle in Bangalore. He was thereafter continuously with the ‘Indian Express and ran a column for the paper without a break for 25 years till 2022, when he finally retired.

The ‘Journalist of the Year' Award for 2021 goes to Om Gaur, National Editor of ‘Dainik Bhaskar’ for leading a team of reporters and photographers that tirelessly exposed the tragedy of Covid deaths in UP’s towns and cities along the River Ganga. Thousands of those who died were given a water burial in the river, while hundreds were left in shallow unmarked graves in the sands that bordered the river. While the state government refused to acknowledge these deaths, Om Gaur and his team played a big part in uncovering this human misery to the world.

These awards, along with 24 other winners in 12 categories, will be presented on Friday, 16th December 2022, at the hands of Justice B N Srikrishna at the Jamshed Bhaba Theatre, NCPA, in Mumbai on Friday, 16th December 2022.

The awards are a multi-layered contest of print/digital and video stories. First, eminent curators sift through hundreds of entries to shortlist the best ones. Thereafter jurists with domain knowledge are set up for each category, who discuss and debate amongst themselves before deciding on the final winners.

The RedInk Awards were instituted by the Mumbai Press Club in 2011 to accord peer recognition to good investigative and feature writing and raise the bar of journalism in the country.

This year, the title sponsor for the event is Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL), while Adani Group and Concept Communication are the gold sponsors. Indiabulls Housing, Aditya Birla Group, L&T Financial Services, Adfactors PR, Viacom18, and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals are associate sponsors.
