Dear members,

A series of brutal attacks and killings of journalists have shocked are community. The burning to death of Jagendra Singh in Shajahanpur, UP, the sudden and unnatural death of Akshaya Singh of Aaj Tak while investigating the Vyapam Scam, are just a couple of examples of the terrifying cycle of violence our profession is facing.

On the other hand, governments both at the Centre and states, are bent upon curbing the freedom of journalists to investigate and exercise their freedom of expression. In recent days, three channels - Aaj Tak, NDTV and ABP News - have been given notices on why they should not be shut down because their coverage of the Yakub Memon case and their questions about the death penalty was found unpalatable.

To discuss these issues, and to create an alliance of media organisations to stem this undemocratic tide, Mumbai Press Club along with other clubs and groups, is organizing a conclave on: 'MEDIA FREEDOM & LAW' in Delhi on 8th and 9th August 2015. Senior journalists including Siddharth Vardharajan, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and Bharat Bhushan are among the speakers. The Mumbai Press Club is represented by Jatin Desai.

Those of us in Delhi or travelling to Delhi are cordially invited to attend and participate in the deliberations. The programme and poster is attached herewith.

The deliberations and decisions will be circulated to members after the conclave.

Gurbir Singh

Chairman - Mumbai Press Club
